I observe the charity and effort put forth by people moved by personal loss or human spirit and there’s still a small part of me that can’t get past the frustrating idea that there might be people in this world who see the elimination of cancer as…

   I don’t doubt it for one second.  The thing with accountability is that it hits a wall if you try to follow it to a single source.  Who does the medical community have to answer to?  Who is there to make sure that their resources are being used efficiently, or that their priorities are in line with those of the people that medicine is used to treat (or pay lip service to while dipping hand into their pockets)?  The question is rhetorical, I’m sure they have some level of accountability, but it doesn’t matter.  Who is going to tell a doctor or scientist that they’re doing it wrong?  A politician or committee?  Please.  Or better yet, an internal committee made up of members of the medical community.

   It’s like taking your car to the shop, you may get the feeling that what they’re doing in there may not have been in your best interest, but how could you possibly prove it?  Who are you going to ask about it, another mechanic?  He’ll smile, tell you the other guy was a jerk, and be the new guy ripping you off from now on.  If they’re fucking you, then they’re all in cahoots, and the only people qualified to call them out are a part of it themselves.

   So yeah, get used to Cancer.
